Bio4Self wins 2019 Global Bioplastics Award

Bio4Self - Hybrid yarn based self-reinforced PLA composites


The renowned Global Bioplastics Award is awarded annually at the European Bioplastics Conference. This year, the Bio4Self project convinced the jury. The topic of the Bio4Self project, which was completed in summer 2019, was the development and testing of self-reinforced polymer composites off PLA. Within the scope of the research project, the mechanical properties (stiffness, tensile strength, impact strength) of PLA were increased. Within the framework of the project, biopolymer fibres, hybrid yarns and fabrics as well as self-reinforced fibre composite sheets were produced at the ITA.

The development was supported by the ITA and a large consortium of industry and research institutions. These are in alphabetical order: Aachen-Maastricht Institute for Biobased Materials (AMIBM) of Maastricht University (The Netherlands), Arçelik AS (Turkey), Centexbel (Belgium), Chemosvit Fibrochem AS (Slovakia), Comfil ApS (Denmark), Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology (ICT) (Germany), Institut für Textiltechnik (ITA) of RWTH Aachen University (Germany), Maier S. Coop (Spain), Mirtec (Greece), Next Technology Tecnotessile (Italy), Open Source Management Ltd (UK), Samsonite NV (Belgium), Steinbeis Advanced Risk Technologies GmbH (Germany), Technical University of Denmark (Denmark) and Tecnaro GmbH (Germany).

The achievements of the consortium partners have already been honoured several times and awarded two prizes: These include the JEC Innovation Award 2019 in the "Sustainability" category and this year's Techtextil Innovation Award 2019 also in the "Sustainability" category.

The BIO4SELF project, which enabled these developments, has received funding by the H2020 Seventh Framework Programme of the European Union under grant agreement no. 685614.
