This year the ITA as partner institute of the new excellence cluster "Internet of Production" (IoP) is part of the “Schüleruni Maschinenbau” once again. Within the framework of the Schüleruni, high school students from all over Germany can visit various institutes of the RWTH Aachen and take part in lectures and exercises. Last Tuesday, 16 July 2019, a group of 20 students visited the ITA to gain an insight into the exciting world of textile technology.

There was a lot to discover during a guided tour of the machinery and technical centre. The pupils were able to learn how heart valves and chemical fibres are related to mechanical engineering in the first place. The production of technical textiles and the use of artificial intelligence to optimise textile machines also met with interest. Finally, the young group of visitors could observe the automated, robot-assisted production of a carbon fibre-reinforced engine bonnet at the ITA preformcenter. In addition, the students were able to drape glass and carbon textiles into various shapes themselves and check the quality of the produced preforms using a 3D vision system.
