On 27 September 2018, the funding application for the "Internet of Production (IoP)" excellence cluster was approved. IoP thus becomes part of the excellence strategy of the German Federal Government and the German Federal States for the promotion of science and research at German universities. The aim of the cluster of excellence IoP is to ensure a holistic production of the future that is intelligent, efficient, tailored to needs and of high quality. IoP is thus setting the course for a new era of production.

Das Institut für Textiltechnik (ITA) of RWTH Aachen University is one of the largest production technology institutes at RWTH Aachen University and is part of the research consortium consisting of more than 25 institutes and research facilities and more than 80 participating researchers from the fields of mechanical engineering, tool technology, mathematics, computer science, business administration and production.

At IoP, the ITA researches new digital services and business models as well as textile value chains in the context of networked production. Concrete building blocks are the digital shadow, machine learning (artificial intelligence), intelligent control systems through process-spanning meta models as well as intelligent function-integrated textiles. The focus of IoP research is on product- and process-specific data. IoP's ITA thus also makes a considerable contribution to the development of the digital infrastructure in the smart textile factory of tomorrow.

With the IoP, the ITA, which has developed the self-adjusting weaving and braiding machine in the "Integrative Production Technology for High-Wage Countries" excellence cluster, which is coming to an end, is strengthening its leading role in textile digitisation. Application areas of the self-adjusting braiding machine are, for example, fibre composite materials for lightweight construction in the automotive and aerospace industries.

The "Internet of Production" excellence cluster is a continuation of the "Integrative Production Technology for High-Wage Countries" excellence cluster (, which has ensured the future viability and competitiveness of the manufacturing industry, e.g. through the development of new intelligent production systems and integrated product life cycle management.

In the medium and short term, the IoP excellence cluster aims to strengthen digitisation topics and expand its leading position in the digitization of (textile) production.
